Wood fibre quality analyzer

Client: Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP)

CRIQ came up with a semi-automated piece of equipment to characterize the mechanical properties of 10,000 to 20,000 wood core samples per year. The equipment can calculate the density, microfibril angle, and the modulus of elasticity of forestry inventory samples for black spruce, balsam fir, jack pine, white spruce, white birch, and trembling aspen.

The CRIQ analyzer has proven very useful to the forest inventory branch at Québec’s Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP), whose mission is to map Québec’s forest ecosystems in order to help plan forest management activities. Data supplied by the equipment are used to map the quality of wood fibre across Québec and may eventually be used in fields from genetic improvement and forest management to wood allocation and marketing. One day they might also be used to optimize the value chain for wood products and to make Québec’s forest industry more competitive.

“CRIQ understood exactly what our ministry needed—to develop a state-of-the-art piece of equipment to make an inventory of wood fibre quality across Québec.”
